I don’t get what is unfair about this question.
Awwww, c’mon. This question is such an obvious attempt to embarrass the man and it isn’t even posed very skillfully. If you think this isn’t out of line you must hate this man so much that you cannot have an ounce of human compassion for an old guy that’s about to have a granddaughter. Let me rephrase Wolf’s question how he really meant it…
Mr. Cheney, your a right wing conservative and we all know that you despise gay people and that you think the only way to raise a child is in a home with a father and a mother. Now your gay daughter is about to have a kid and here’s a statement from a right wing group that criticizes your daughters ability to raise a child properly and wheter or not it’s even fair to bring a child into that type of environment. So Grandpa, watcha think about that?
C’mon Michael, I know you, you have enough human sympathy in your heart to recognize that this is in the very least an attempt to embarrass a man who is about to enjoy one of the true joys of live, a grandkid.
I watched the interview in full. I didn’t think this was an attempt to embarass VP Cheney. I thought it was a fair question of a Republican vp. and certainly a fair question when the republican stance on Gays, marraige and the family are what they are. I would think that our leaders should strive to be an example of the platform they put forth.
After watching the interview I really thought it was Cheney that made the moment ackward. In fact he had dodged and was quite condescending to Blitzer on many, many earlier questions. (and I am no Blitzer fan)
Yes, the point is that he was embarrassed by a question that he shouldn’t have been embarrassed about. The question was his reaction to this statement by Focus on the Family:
Mary Cheney’s pregnancy raises the question of what’s best for children. Just because it’s possible to conceive a child outside of the relationship of a married mother and father doesn’t mean it’s the best for the child.
Mr. Cheney, the correct answer to the question was “It is out of line for Focus on the Family to imply that my daughter’s family is somehow second rate and represents a harmful environment to my future grandchild. That is absurd and it deeply offends me.”
Wolf Blitzer gave you an opportunity to NOT BE AN ASSHOLE TO YOUR OWN FUCKING DAUGHTER AND YOU PASSED IT UP.
Dick Cheney should be absolutely ashamed of himself and he should beg his daughter for forgiveness. That he would pander to political interests rather than side by his own daughter is sad, sad, sad.
If Cheney’s politics are in conflict with being accepting of his own family, he should be embarrassed. We should cut him some slack because he is a fag hater? Ah….no.
you’re right. cheney is obviously a fag hater, he hates his daughter, he will most likely hate the progeny of his fag daughter, especially if said progeny is also a fag, and there is no nuance at all.
and if you honestly think that none of your liberal heroes ever run into political situations that are in conflict with what happens in their own family then you truly have drank too much kool-aide.
i know you find it hard to believe but cheney is just a man with the same frailties and emotions as you and me, but you choose to politicize even this most private of moment of personal joy.
and i thought that us righties were the unfeeling, callous assholes. go figure.
If there is any issue where the Left is right and the Right is wrong, completely and absolutely, it is the issue of equality for same-sex couples. The platform of the Republican party on this issue is untenable. They will lose and they will look dumb in history.
So, no, I don’t cut people slack who choose to promote an agenda of prejudice towards same-sex couples. Cheney created an uncomfortable situation for himself by having anti-gay politics. He shouldn’t have anti-gay politics. Thus, he deserves to squirm.
man, i am 100% percent with you on the politics of this. me and you actually are pretty much in alignment on most social issues. i just think there is a certain level of decorum and plain old human compassion that gets lost by hyper-politicizing everything.
love him or hate him, let the fuckin’ guy enjoy the birth of his grandson and the joy of his daughter’s pregnancy without turning it into a political issue. let it freakin’ be and go after his anti-gay politics on another day and in another way. you don’t teach your dog not to shit in the house by rubbing his nose in it. are you trying to embarrass somebody or are you trying to advance a cause? if your trying to advance a cause, this kind of bullshit just angers your opponent and turns people (like me) off who just may be sympathetic to your views.
pick your battles and be smart about the way you wage them. this is not smart, it’s mean-spirited and embarrassing.
